You deserve to feel safe

If you’re reading this because something doesn’t feel right in your relationship, know that you’re not alone.

Domestic abuse isn’t always physical. It can include coercive control, emotional abuse, financial abuse, threats, intimidation, isolation or controlling behaviours that make you feel frightened, powerless or trapped. Abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity or background.

You do not have to have all the answers today. Taking time to understand what you’re experiencing is an important first step.

If you’re in immediate danger

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999.

If you cannot speak, you can use the Silent Solution: call 999 from a mobile, cough or make a noise when prompted, then press 55 when instructed by the operator. If you’ve registered with the emergency SMS service, you can also contact 999 by text.

Thinking about leaving?

Leaving an abusive relationship can be one of the highest-risk times, because the person causing harm may increase their controlling behaviour when they feel they are losing control. You do not need to leave immediately, and you should never feel pressured into making a decision before you’re ready. Specialist domestic abuse services can help you plan safely and at your own pace.

Simple safety planning

If it feels safe to do so, consider:

  • Keeping your mobile phone charged and with you where possible.
  • Saving emergency numbers under discreet names if needed.
  • Telling someone you trust what is happening and agreeing a code word if you need urgent help.
  • Preparing an emergency bag with essentials such as medication, identification, keys, money and important documents, and storing it somewhere safe.
  • Thinking about where you could go if you needed to leave quickly.

Know your rights

Everyone has the right to live free from abuse.

You may be entitled to protection through the law, access to specialist support, emergency accommodation, housing advice, advocacy and practical support. You also have the right to be treated with dignity, respect and confidentiality while exploring your options.

Help is available

You don’t have to go through this alone. Specialist organisations can provide confidential advice, emotional support, safety planning and practical guidance whenever you’re ready.
